used a great analogy about when
he was growing up in a tiny and impoverished village in Haiti.
As a child, he struggled to barely stay alive.
He was abandoned by his father and left behind by his mother
who went to Port-au-Prince to find work. For
food, he ate nothing but breadfruit and the occasional
rare fish he would catch. But his fondest
memory is the sound of roosters waking up the entire village.
Rene draws on many such experiences to drive
his leadership point home. He challenges managers and executives
alike to be the roosters in their villages.
"America is the greatest country in the
world. I have lived on both sides. I know the difference. This
country is the envy of the entire globe. She is the
leader. But it's time a for a wake-up call. The
workforce in this country is coasting. They need a wake up
call."
Said Rene.
He went on to explain that is the duty of the
top execs to wake up the bottom line. Rene believes the new
leadership paradigm is called for managers to mentor rather
than manage.
People tend to fully throw themselves into their
work when they feel a sense they are being nurtured. Employees
will not care until they know their superiors
care.
Then Rene connected with the audience while sharing
how he was starving and neglected in the village. "Today,
I realize that there are many starving and
deprived kids in companies across this country just like I
was in my village. Yes! They are starving for appreciation
and recognition.
More and more leaders are becoming self-centered.
They are so in love with the golden eggs--profits and share
holders. In the process, they tend to forget and neglect
the goose that lays the eggs--the employees."
To close, Rene told a story about when he returned
to his village for the first time after years of being away.
The villagers came in droves to welcome him. They
call him the "village hero." Then he cited all of
the characteristics of a village hero.
Rene does not talk with empty rethoric and platitudes.
He speaks with conviction and authority on strategies he has
used in his life. Those strategies have taken him from being
a doorman carrying bags to an author carrying books. His own
book, that is.
"Kick Your Excuses Goodbye" is the
title of his book. The depth, breath and scope of Rene's presention
is not possible to explain in this short writing.

for you to have a conversation with Rene on how he can wake
up your team.
