How To Get A Promotion And Pay Raise At Work

Promotions and pay raises in the workplace

Do you sometimes feel like you are stuck in a dead-end position at work? Do you watch other people zoom to the top of your company that are not even as qualified as you are? When was the last time you got a promotion and a significant raise?

As I travel all over North America to keynote conferences, I get to meet a lot people that are stuck in dead-end positions. They are frustrated. They blame the company or their bosses.

Did you know that you are 100% responsible for your promotion?

The reality is, your boss or your company will not go out of their way to give you a promotion or a raise. You have to prove to them that you are worthy of it. You have to do the things that trigger promotions. That’s exactly what I’m about to reveal to you here.

You are about to learn a strange secret that will enable you to literally force your company or boss to give you the promotion you deserve. In fact, the moment you fully understand what you will learn here, you’ll be able to double or even triple your income in a short time. But before I proceed, I want to point out something of vital importance to you.

People don’t get fired. They fire themselves.

You see, it takes a lot of work in order to get fired. For example: You have to choose to be consistently late, fight change, refuse to cooperate with your boss, perform poorly, ignore the warnings, etc. Simply put, getting fired is just an event.  Your behavior and attitude are the process that leads to the event.

It’s very important that you get what I just said. Here’s why: The strange secret I’m about to reveal to you will not work if you are playing victim in the workplace. You have to accept total responsibility for your current condition and position.

You have to know that you are in control of your future with the company. Here’s something else I’d like for you to consider:

Promotions and raises don’t reside inside your comfort zone!

Let me put it another way for you. You’ll never be able to get what you really want inside your comfort zone. You need to step out. Why? It’s because the secret you are about to learn never works inside the comfort zone.

I’m known as a Leading Authority on possibility discovery! However, I cannot help you discover what’s possible for you in the workplace unless you are ready to ready to do something that is not comfortable. Stated differently, I need your permission to help you succeed in the workplace. Is that a deal?

Okay, why am I calling this a strange secret? It’s because most people know it but few take advantage of it.  Let’s face it, if a thing is obvious and you are not making use of it, it’s a secret to you, isn’t it? In fact, let’s call what I want to share with you a wealth attraction secret.

By the way, just so you know, I didn’t dream of this or cook it up in the oven of my mind just last night. It’s rather something that I have been using over and over to get whatever I want in life. And if you do use and apply it you will also get whatever you want in life.

Let me quickly share with an example of how I doubled my salary in less than a month using exactly what you will learn.

Taking Care Of Mr. Arnovitz

I was 26 years old when I met Mr. Arnovitz. He was a wealthy man. He had terminal cancer. He was in so much pain that he was often irritated. That made really hard for him to find and keep a good caretaker.

One day, I met Marcia—the agency that was hiring the caretakers for Mr. Arnovitz. Marcia gave me a crash course on being a caretaker. Then, I was on my way to taking care of Mr. Arnovitz.

Marcia told me that there was a BIG problem. She disappointingly said to me, “This is not an easy, Rene. Every week, I have to send a different caretaker for Mr. Arnovitz. The caretakers are impatient. They don’t understand that the man is terrible pain.”

I assured Marcia that I could solve the problem for her. I told her that I had never been fired from a job before. And this time is going to be no exception.

Sure enough, Mr. Arnovitz and I became buddies. He started bragging about me with his friends and family members. He finally found the person that understood and could connect with him.

For five days a week I lived in with Mr. Arnovitz. On weekends, I would go home. Marcia would send somebody to replace me. But, that didn’t work out. Then, she had a brilliant idea. She decided to hire a Haitian to replace me on weekends. That didn’t work out either.

It had nothing to do with neither Haitians nor any other nationality. Let me also tell you that it had nothing to do with me. However, it had everything to do with the strange you will soon learn about. Anybody from anywhere in the world armed this powerful secret could be just as effective as I was.

One Sunday I came back to work. Mr. Arnovitz told me he needed to talk to me. As we were seating at the table, I looked at his face and felt something was wrong.

After a moment of silence, he picked his glass of prune juice and took a sip. Then he started telling how he was frustrated and fed up. He told me he didn’t want to deal anymore with so many strangers coming in and out of his life. Before I said anything, Mr. Arnovitz made a very enticing offer to me.

He said, “I know the agency pays you. But, I’m willing to double your pay if you agree to stay with on weekends as well.” He continued, “Don’t worry. This is our deal.” But his last sentence threw me off. He said, “I will pay you under the table”.

Now, I was new in the US. I was still learning English. We were seating at the table. I paused for a moment and said, “Give a second Mr. Arnovitz, I’ll be right back.”

I went to the other room to speak to his wife.

I said, “Mrs. Arnovitz, sorry to bother you. Do you know if Mr. Arnovitz took his medication today?” She said, “Yes. Why do you ask?” I said, “Oh, we’re having a conversation about the possibility of staying with him on weekends. And he said he would pay me under the table, mom.”

Mrs. Arnovitz instantly became aware I didn’t know what her husband meant. So, she explained it to me. I said, “Oh, thank you.” I went back to the table and said, “It’s a deal. I will stay with you on weekends Mr. Arnovitz”.

As soon as I accepted his offer, his face lit up. He called his children to announce the good news. He also told Marcia, the agency, that he no longer needed her service on weekends.

Well, Marcia knew what was going and she was happy about it. In fact, she was relieved. Marcia was more interested in making sure Mr. Arnovitz was happy so that she could get more business from the family in the future.

For seven days a week I took excellent care of Mr. Anovitz day and night. Eventually, he ended up in the hospital. I was there with him for weeks until he passed away.

I would have so many conversations about life with my new buddy and friend. I was the only one standing by his bedside at his final hour. It was around 2:00 am when he left his body.

I never forgot the final moment right before he took his last breath. I was holding his hand. He clinched it really hard and starred at me as if he wanted to say, “Thank you and goodbye”. Within a few seconds, his hand became limb and cold. My friend died.

It’s always hard for me to tell that story. But it was a stop in my journey that cemented a belief for me.  It’s exactly what I want to share with you here. It’s the strange secret that you can embrace to make sure you are never stuck at a dead-end position.

It’s how you can make you will never be denied of a promotion. It’s also how you connect at a deep level with another human being. Here’s the strange secret:

Always do more than you are being paid for!

That’s how Mr. Arnovizt doubled my pay in less than a month. That’s why we bonded in such a short time. I went above and beyond the call of duty every time without being told. I did for him what no other caretaker in the world would do.

That’s my STRANGE SECRET. That’s how you can double or even triple your salary. That’s how you get promoted fast. Think about it this way:

Most people do just enough in order NOT to get fired.

When you do more than you are being paid for, you automatically belong to a new and different category—the top 2%. You become a most valuable team player. People want you to be on their team! You become indispensable.

Believe it or not, the advice I’m giving you now is not just for you. It’s also for your boss, and his or her bosses. Everyone must do more than what is expected in order to succeed in the workplace or life.

The shareholders are expecting more than that they invest. That goes to say even your CEO has to do more than what he or she is being paid for.

You may be saying, “Gosh, Rene, you just don’t know. I’ve been doing more than I’m being paid for. But, they don’t care.” Sure. I got that. But let me ask this: For how long have you been doing it? It took me one month.

For you, it may be two months, six months, one year, or even two years. It’s just like planting seeds. You gotta be patient.

I’ve seen people come to a company and in a short period of time, they start demanding a raise or a promotion. For whatever reason, they feel like they are entitled to it.

In some cases, they even get jealous because others are making more money then they are. Here’s a nugget of wisdom for you:

Promotions and raises are not given. They are earned.

You see, success is not an elevator. It is a flight of stairs. To get there, you have to raise yourself to the top one step at a time. As I said before, a promotion is an event that is preceded by a process. Let me repeat the strange secret for you again. Catch it and make it a new habit.
Promotions and pay raises in the workplace

ALWAYS do more than what you are being paid for. Always do more than what is expected of you.

Without this one simple HABIT, your financial struggles NEVER end. Promotions and raises will go right past by you to the next person that has the habit of delivering more than what is expected.

No one notices you when you are doing just your job. No one notices you when you are working your eight-hour shift. That is what is expected of you.

You get noticed when you stay past your shift to help your team finish a project on time.
The way to get on your bosses’ radar is when you are performing above and beyond his or her expectations.

By the way, the story I shared with you bout Mr. Arnovitz is only one of the many stories I have. When I was quitting my last job, I gave my resignation letter to the hotel. My immediate boss and the other managers didn’t want to accept it.

They basically told me to make my own schedule and come to work when I wanted to. They knew I was traveling the country keynoting conferences. Many people tell me I was lucky that my company would allow me to pursue my dream while working there.

No. I wasn’t lucky. It’s because I consistently did more than I was being paid for. I always stayed late and come in early when they needed me. I was the employee that never said,

“It’s not my job. It’s not my department”.

I’m not saying every company would allow you to pursue your dream while working for them. But, I’m saying if you embrace the attitude of always do more than you’re being paid for, you’ll be rewarded one way or the other.

Now, once you start making this strange secret a new habit, you’ll risk being unpopular with those that do just enough in order not to get fired. You will even be the subject of criticism. Rest assured that idle co-workers tend to behave that way. It’s okay.

You don’t want to join their company nor seek their approval. Work is not a popularity contest. It’s the place you go so you can put food on your table and take care of your family.

There you have it. I just handed the key to the vault where raises and promotions await. To take it even further, you can use this secret to improve your relationships.

If you are an entrepreneur, you can use it to explode your business. All you have to do is to figure out what your customers expect and exceed their expectations.

It’s totally up you to make it a habit. Use this key to unlock the vault. Habits are formed with conscious repetition. The habit of always doing more than what is expected is guaranteed to explode your career and put more money in your bank account!

There is no such thing as a dead end job, because with every job you gain knowledge and experience, is a job a career? No, but you have to understand the difference.

Excellent point Craig! It’s what you are getting that makes the difference. It’s who you are becoming in the process.
